This year I have purchased a top of the line roof washing rig that has cut the time down to a fraction of the previous cleaning time. This is not a power washer and there is no pressure in the application or cleaning of the roof. This process does not remove the granules from asphalt roofs. Most importantly the detergent used does not harm your grass, shrubs or animals. I do not use bleach as most companies use as it kills plants and can damage surround areas of your home.

What are causing roof stains? The ugly, dark stains that are so prevalent in Richmond are caused by a very hardy “blue-green” algae, Gloeocapsa magma. If you don’t ever recall your parents having this roof problem you are right they did not have roof stains. Shingle design and composition has changed over the years to include limestone filler. Alage of course as always been around but it never had a food source on roofs until the addition of limestone in the shingles. Algae thrives on it and it’s the reason so many roofs are now stained.
